Ouuuuh, pretty lights :?

Naheulbeuk in korean.

I hope Master PoC will sell the movie rights to Chan Park-Wook. Maybe he'll do a trilogy : Sympathy for Mr. Ranger, OldOgre and Sympathy for Lady elf !

With plenty of Korean women ! Yay ! :7

Today brighton, tomorrow, the world !!

but I just desagree with you guys on some points.

1)the non elf girl can't definitely be a witch. I am a witch and I know who they are. she's a wizard, like Pratchett's Esk. I mean, she has books, doesn't she ?

2) I rather translate "je suis un nain connasse" by " I'm a dwarf, butthead !"
3) the word "weird" seems appropriate for "un type bizarre s'approche" odd introduces an idea of hazard, of uncasual things, which is not at all implicated in this case. Think about "weird tales", they are strange and menacing, just like this dude.

Oh boy I don't remember what comes next !

-It is said in the tables of skeloss that a onelegged gnome from the forest of the north, dancing on full moon night aroud the twelve idols wrapped in ham slices may open the doors of Zaralbak and fullfill the prophecy
-It 's always a good thing to have a prophecy...
-I don't know...Sometimes it's all about destroying the world...

How the hell do I have fun !!!!

I'd say 'it's written on the tables...' and so on.
And maybe the sentence of the elf could be "Prophecies are always good things..."

Actually, the best stuff to translate would be the comics...

However:
1/ it's hard to translate a comic strip (when I was in Austalia, i tried to do that on a couple of pages made by Fab)
2/ this type of comics is specific to french-speaking countries...

But why not change the format (as did the Caste des Métabarons) so that the Donjon de naheulbeuk could be printed in a comics form?

Regards,
Skro, I think that the Incal was submissed to the same treatement

Dancing "under the full moon" seems better.

The original word is "the skroll of Skelos" in Conan; which was translated in French by "tablettes".

I suggest we get back to the original reference.

"The skroll of Skelos states that..." sounds more appropriate: beware of the "French thinking": we tend to translate sentences straightforward, which is a bit weird (that witch is a bit weird?)... It is better to reverse sentences like, say, socks...

SOCK !!!!

That's why Clow is right: it's usually better to have an English to do the job.

And I also strongly suggest classical (shakespearian) English to be used as a basis of translation, customized with modern slang...

Welf, ZoC :dem3

ps: though I get pais to translate things* from French to English, comic strips are not my trade: Doctor Bis is the right man for this right place...

* I always say "things" for the pseudo-textual IT documentation I translate from Swiss-French... :D

Boh...

Bref. J'y vois l'homme... Zeuh man... zeuh man whou will younaït aul zeuh félauw ship (like the crystal ship, you know ?)... Zeuuh man whou will brèk down thawzandz yearz of war bitouin djerrrman and rrrroman (bien rouler les "r", là, sinon, ça ne compte pas) gaillez ! Zeuuh man whou will meque Frenchs and Anglishs frihèndz... Foréveuhar...

Enfin, une chose est sûre, la traduction, c'est pas pour moi.

First of all, it's scroll, with a "c" not a "k".

And about the french way of mind, I had a teacher who told us that it was the english language that had a more straightforward approach. Where the french language has a much more sleazy way to say things.
English goes generally straight to the point, a lot of words are pretty onomatopoeic, which gives a natural flow into the words.

I would say that english is very appropriate as an oral language, where french is a more litterary language.

I know you meant, the french have a straightforward way of TRANSLATING stuff, so I'm not exactly talking 'bout the same thing. But it's important to keep this in mind for a real translation. You really have to keep an oral feeling ( 8)7 ) to the text.

And that's exactly why I don't like this language. It is too "functional" and not litterary enough. That's why French, rather than English, is the official language for diplomacy :p. And English vocabulary is quite poor, there are quite few synonyms. Of course, if you add all the verbs with postposition (indeed, I dislike those verbs), you have very many words :r. But a thing I love in English is "double passive" : "I was given a book for Chrismas" for example.

I don't know what gave you that weird idea...Knowing quite a few diplomats, I can tell you none of them could even think about using french, although many of them really could....

About the translation, I'm telling you : By sunday, the complete first episode should be on this topic...No doubt you'll have things to tell me about it, and if the maaaaaaaaaaaaster could tell what he thinks of it (isn't he part irish after all ?)

And, to Welf : afterwards I can try to translate it in Old English (i.e. saxon), but it would take a while.
Middle English (shakespearian) is not my favourite, so I don't think I really could do it...

EDIT : It went faster than I thought, so here is the text (translated line per line from the official text). I don't have a wordbook, so any suggestion is welcome.

And Welf, the original text refers to tables, so I'm keeping tables. But maybe I'm wrong.

The Wizard : Ogres are sometimes poets...
The Ranger : It isn't interesting !

The Wizard : Ogres can dance and sing...
The Ranger : I said we don't care !
The Wizard : An Ogre can cook or put wallpapers...
The Ranger : You really want my fist in your face ?
The Wizard : Uh is that so ? Then stay ignorant !
The Ogre : Huh huh huh huh huh huh huh....
The Dwarf : I'd like to go in, I'm cold !
The Ogre : Akala miam miam.
The Ranger : What did he say ?

The Elf : This Ogre is really a gap !
The Ranger : Okay, the Ogre can eat a sandwich before we go in, but fast.
The Wizard : Zog zog akiita.
The Ogre : Doula.
The Thief : By the way, what is our mission ?
<sound> The Ranger unrolls a scroll.
The Ranger : We have to find the twelth idol of Gladeulferah.
The Elf : An idol ?
The Ranger : It is said in the tables of Skeloss that only a one-legged Gnome of
the North Forests dancing under full moon between the twelve idols
wrapped in ham will open the Gate of Zaral Bak, thus fulfilling the
Prophecy.
The Thief : But what is this strange prophecy ?
The Ranger : No Idea. It's wealth we're looking for.
The Elf : No problem, prophecies are always a good thing.
The Ranger : Depends, sometimes it's about destroying the world.
The Barbarian : We go in ?!!
The Ogre : Glozou bok.
The Dwarf : What did he say ?
The Wizard : He's done with his sandwich.
The Thief : We have to find a way in...
The Ogre : Akala glouglou.
The Ranger : What's the matter now with the butthead ?
The Wizard : He says he's thirsty now.
The Ranger : Then let him drink, don't give a damn !
<sound> The Ogre uncorks a bottle and starts to drink.
The Dwarf : I'm fed up, it's freezing here, I'm done with you !
The Elf : Good riddance !
The Ogre : Burp !
The Ranger : Hey, Dwarf ! Stay with us, else you're gonna please the Elf !
The Dwarf : Oh, ******* !
The Dwarf : You're right ! I'm gonna stay just for her !
The Elf : I don't care, I'm gonna open this door...
<sound> The elf is knocking at the door.
The Ranger : What the hell are you doing ?
The Elf : Well, I'm knocking, and somebody will open us.
The Ranger : Great, so much for sneaking in.
<sound> Applause.
The Dwarf : What a jerk !
<sound> The door slides open.
The Elf : See ? It's working.
The Barbarian : Hmf !
The Thief : Friends, it's open...

Actually, when I meant comics, I ddn't intend to restart the whole job.
As for the Incal, I just suggested a new shape (basically "US-comics sized")to fit the market.

By the way, if Stan Lee proposed to draw a new version of the Donjon, I'd be interested in seeing the sketchbook :D

Regards,
Skro, who'll find his transdlation of Fab's work as soon as possible (which means later... laaaaaaaaaaaaaater)

The Thief : What an **********...
The Barbarian : Fairy !

The Ranger : So, does everyone have their gear?
The Dwarf : Of course we have our gear !

The Thief : By the way, what is our mission ?
<sound> The Ranger unrolls a scroll.
The Ranger : We have to find the twelth idol of Gladeulferah.
The Elf : An idol ?
The Ranger : It is said in the tablets of Skeloss that only a one-legged Gnome of
the North Forests dancing under the full moon between the twelve idols
wrapped in ham will be able to open the Gate of Zaral Bak, thus fulfilling the
Prophecy.
The Thief : But what is this strange prophecy ?
The Ranger : No Idea. We only care about wealth.
The Elf : It's ok, prophecies are always a good thing.

The Dwarf : Ah, ******* !
The Dwarf : You're right ! Just to ******* her off, I'm staying!
The Elf : I don't care, I'm gonna open this door...
<sound> The elf is knocking at the door.
The Ranger : What on earth are you doing?
The Elf : Well, I'm knocking, so that somebody opens the door!
The Ranger : Congratulations, talk about a discrete entrance.
<sound> Applause.
The Dwarf : Dumb broad!
<sound> The door slides open.
The Elf : See ? It works!
The Barbarian : Hmf !
The Thief : My friends, the door is open...

Guys guys guys!

This topic is on the wrong way... Er, actually it's on the right way according to the title, but each and every of us was (until this moment) playing the game of discussing about Naheulbeuk in english.

Please please please don't turn this thread into one of the thousands of other more-or-less-uninteresting threads that flourish in this section, and let it be the one and only topic about Naheulbeuk in english

Best regards,
Skro, have you ever seen that an "acronym" for Naheulbeuk would be NHB... Quite american, for an acronym ;)

Edit for 2 reasons:
1/ some text-formatting error...
2/ Actually, NBK could also be an american-whatever acronym... ;)

Except that, apparently, the "official" logo (provided anything can be considered official about this) is NBK... It's the one used on the CD, labelled as "NBK01".
Nice try, Skro. :)
