in this context the translation of "voleur" isn't thief but "rogue", thief is more the outlaw, and rogue is the role-playing class.
I'm working on a translation of the saga with my english penfriend.
To me the best way to do a great translation is :
1/roughly translate the text ourselves
2/give this translated text to an english person who can change it with fashionable expressions

Thief is a RP class as well (at least in (A)D&D...)
You won't fool me on this point, I own a wonderful copy of Baldur's Gate II bought in Australia... The class you choose is "Thief" with some sub-classes.
And in my opinion, the best translation is the one made:
- by a locale
- fluent in the original language of the work (in general)
- with bases in writing
- and, most important, in phase with the spirit of the work

I'm pretty sure she just means that ogres can put up wallpapers on walls. That is after all a fairly delicate task which requires precision and gentle strength :-)
Also, sure, if you've played Diablo I, rogue is the class.. But if you go play a MUD, any MUD, you're much more likely to encounter "Thief" than "Rogue". Because a thief is a thief, and 'rogue' simply means someone who's gone away from the laws.. A rogue gunman for instance is a gunman who's not part of a team anymore. Compare it if you will to 'rounin' in japanese.

Actually, Garcimore is a "conjurer"... making "cantrips" (or "cheap tricks", as Gandalf notes in The Fellowship if the Ring).
there are many word to name the masters of the arcane powers:
Warlock (somewhat bad tempered, and heavy on doom spells)
Wizard --> the "feminine" word is A WITCH
Necromancer (t-bone steak eater)
Summoner (goblins and wabbits spring out of his fancy hat)
Magician: rather generic
Sorcerer: his powers come more from the blood and the ethod than from precise spells... Somewhat bad tempered, especially when facing a snow-white maiden.
Elementalist: the "fire" subcategory is te pinacle of magic (not entierly objective, but blazing opposition).

for me, Starwoman, Glandalf, Radagast are just Istarii, Maïars, Aïnurs of a lesser rank that the Valars of old. (corrected, thanks Burnt-Lock)
