Vous aussi, vous galérez à jongler entre divers mappage de claviers ? Vous aussi, bande de gros geeks pingouinoïdes, en avez marre de jongler entre votre AZERTY classique, un QWERTY utilisé dans la plupart des applis que vous employez, et votre DVORAK bricolé à la main pour vos codage-party ? Vous aussi, bande de gros 3leE7 G4|/|3rZ, en avez ras le bourrichon de devoir vous taper de têtes vingt-trois kilomètres de listings de raccourcis claviers ou de devoir galérer à poser le récapitulatif des raccourcis entre votre écran et votre clavier ?
Avec cet objet, vos petits yeux de geeks vont s'illuminer, votre poil va redevenir luisant, vous allez à nouveau péter la forme ! Imaginez un écran dont les touches changeraient d'affichage à la volée, comme on le souhaite ! Fini la galère pour se rapeller de toutes les commandes contenues dans les 800 pages de la notice de Lock On, bonjour l'optimisation à WoW, fini les changement de mappages aléatoires entre AZERTY et QWERTY qui vous font galérer pour retrouver LE caractère perdu dont vous avez besoin !
Mais comment est-ce possible, allez vous me dire ? He bien, très simplement, mon cher Maryse. Artemy Lebedev, patron du studio art.lebedev (Moscou, Russie - a par exemple conçu le design des nouveaux micro-ondes Samsung), a tout simplement eu l'idée lumineuse de remplacer les touches opaques d'un clavier "classique" par des touches en plastique transparents, chacune recouvrant un petit écran OLED !
Par contre, il ne s'agit pour l'instant que d'un concept-keyboard, hein, attention. Ne pas sauter au plafond tout de suite, même si je l'attend en bavant. D'après leur FAQ (savoureuse, je vous la conseille) et une paire d'interview qu'ils ont donnés, ils sont en négociations avec différents industriels. Ils ont bon espoir de pouvoir le proposer courant 2006 à un tarif entre 200$ et 300$ (rappelez-vous du prix du Logitech Di Novo à sa sortie avant de hurler comme des putois). Au niveau interfaces, il travaillerait en USB2.0 et peut être en Firewire. La présence d'une alimentation externe n'est pas exclue. Les écrans seraient commandés par un petit logiciel open-source.

Thank you for this interview. At first, we would like to know when the developing for the optimus keyboard started. How worked the process of developing the interface? When did you get the idea to build a keyboard consisting of small displays?
Actually I thought about such keyboard more that 15 years ago, while I was a school student. Later I became a designer, started my own design company, felt in love with industrial design and made this keyboard more real than just an idea in my mind.
Which aspect of this keyboard got your attention at first? Was it the quite genius idea to replace buttons with displays or was it something other, such as the simple but good looking design?
I’m one of those strange people who suffer from lousiness and mediocrity of modern keyboards. Every day I have to work with Latin and Cyrillic alphabets at the same time (btw, I switch between the two using the Caps Lock key). But standard Russian keyboard layout itself is one big mistake, so I have to use my own layout (you can read more about this in my article: http://www.artlebedev.com/mandership/105/).
I’m not interested in things that just look good, they’re too easy to create.
I’m using a quite standard Microsoft Elite keyboard. Which aspect is - just by having the focus on design - the most elegance - disturbing aspect of the classic keyboards of our time?
Modern keyboards are created by programmers for programmers. I used to think of a keyboard as an input device for myself, not anyone else. But I don’t think that my layout should satisfy anyone but me. This is where Optimus comes to light.
How fare are you away from taking this keyboard to the masses? You wrote “patents pending”. Without being indiscreetly, are there any negotiations with resellers and / or producers?
Yes, we are negotiating with manufacturers to deliver our keyboard to the market in a year or so.
Apart from the fact that a pricing guess in this state of production is always very hard, what would you guess how much this keyboard would cost if it would be brought to masses world-wide?
$200 is extremely optimistic, $300 is just optimistic.
Apart from the mus-mouse, what are your plans for the future at art.lebedev?
For the last decade we’ve been know in Russia as website and interface designers. For the next decade my plan is to have the same position in industrial design. And after our successful partnership with Samsung on design of their new microwave oven I can say that we’re going slightly ahead of schedule :-)
Thank you for this interview. One last question: Which keyboard do you use yourself?
I use two of them: an old-style Microsoft’s Natural Keyboard Pro, and PI Engineering’s X-keys programmable keypad.

Artemy Lebedv: We're in the process of negotiations with several technology providers and manufacturers.
PT: Any names for manufacturers? If not, can you tell me if they'd be Russian and/or American?
AL: As of now we are going to produce it under our own brand, Art. Lebedev. No doubt manufacturing will be in China or Korea.
[Ed.- To clarify the difference between these first two questions, as of now, the company will hold the rights to the keyboard (as opposed to selling the design) and have it produced by another company overseas]
PT: How is the display of characters handled? Does the board come equipped with built in icons? Are packages downloaded over time?
AL: We've thought about the first "open-source keyboard". There will be an SDK and some user "keyboard studio" application which will allow keyboard to be customized for any mode or application in any way imaginable, from DVORAK to arranging letters in alphabetical order.
PT: In addition to handling the external design, is your company working on the wiring, electronics, and schematics as well?
AL: We do the industrial design and interface engineering on our part. These two are of our specialties.
PT: Will it be wireless, Bluetooth, or USB only?
AL: USB 2.0 for sure…FireWire - probably. Possibly it will have an external power supply. No need for Bluetooth.
PT: Any word on Windows, Mac OS, and Linux compatibility?
AL: I see no reason to make keyboard OS-dependant. As you can see from the current layout we have enough keys for Win or Mac control keys. As well, we made the keyboard several keys larger than usual QWERTY to comfortable fit all the Cyrillic letters (there are 33 of them).
PT: Will it be geared more to industry at first or consumers?
AL: We were keeping in mind typesetting professionals first. But without forgetting all kind of users, especially gamers. It will also be of great use to sound and movie pros.
PT: What kind of material is the Optimus made out of?
AL: The body is aluminum-wrapped.
PT: How long has the Optimus been in design?
AL: About a year.
PT: Any approximations on cost yet?
AL: I can hardly imagine it to be less than $200 to $300 (USD). Sounds like a lot for a keyboard, but most modern mobile phones cost about that.
PT: And a release date?
AL: Hopefully our keyboard will show the light in a year or so.

en même temps, ce qui 'm'inquiete', c'est voyant l'état de mon dernier clavier au moment ou je l'ai jeté (il était devenu bicolore), et je sais que je suis pas le seul dans ce cas là, je suis pas sur que je souhaite mettre beaucoup d'argent dans un clavier...
en même temps, c'est quand même Ze clavier de Über Geek (vu qu'avec on peut aussi mettre toutes les touches en noir) et rien que pour ça, je le veux (je dis pas que je l'acheterai, mais je le veux)

Xardel tu ne dois pas beaucoup pratiquer la simulation de vol parce que tu ne dirais pas ça je pense.
Ce bonheur que ce serait de ne pas à avoir à apprendre les combinaisons de touches d'une logique sans faille pour changer les modes radar et autres choses du genre !
En même temps, faudra se farcir les dessins à lui faire afficher sur les touches pour pouvoir personnaliser, vu mes talents en Paint en 36x36 pixel, ce n'est pas gagné...
